New Safeguarding Requirements in the UK

The UK workplace is evolving. As of October 26, 2024, the Worker Protection Act 2023 introduced a new legal duty: all employers must take reasonable steps to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace. For the drinks industry, where with increasing reports of harrassment at work, and unique challenges like alcohol-centric environments heighten risks, this is a welcome and much needed change.

As of October 26, 2024, the Worker Protection Act 2023 introduced a new legal duty: all employers must take reasonable steps to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace. This is a serious call to action to improve safeguarding in the UK drinks industry.

At Drinks United, we’re not just responding to compliance requirements; we’re leading a movement for a safer, more inclusive drinks industry. Through collaboration, innovation, and proactive leadership, we want to help set the gold standard for workplace safety.

The Worker Protection Act: A Call to Action

The Worker Protection Act 2023 introduces a new era of accountability and a serious call to action for better safeguarding in the UK drinks industry.

From October 2024, employers must:

  • Implement robust safeguarding policies.

  • Provide staff training on preventing and addressing harassment.

  • Establish clear reporting mechanisms for workplace incidents.

For the drinks industry, where 37% of women in wine (1) and over 70% of women in whisky (2) report workplace harassment, the stakes couldn’t be higher. This legislation is a much-needed step to address these systemic issues.
